Drones have been around for about as long as the first plane was invented, or the Zeppelin, etc.. yet it is interesting to see that our current choice of drones have now reached capabilities that few had expected.
According to MIT TECH REVIEW, Dronetech is already changing AGRICULTURE, TRANSPORT and the MILITARY, in a way that will mark a departure from old-school tactics and strategies, for ever !!
Several uses cases are now emerging, especially in the Internet of Things realm.
Drones can sometimes be perceived as ‘toys’, that many people fly as a hobby, whilst armies have more professional use cases and will deploy them for reconnaissance and investigation, whilst others are …. still figuring out its best use cases, to be frankly honest.

Light, heat and temperature sensors for locating human beings, animals, or a better monitoring of our quite underperforming weather systems…

In relation to the cases or missions detailed above, working drones must have industrial design specifications and can expect specific improvement:
They are hardened to handle a wider range of environmental setups, like heat, bad weather, windy conditions,…
They often have more propellers and batteries, depending on the weight they must carry throughout the mission
They are often typically equipped with cameras, radars, lights, sensors for intelligent flight and avoiding obstacles.. and many, many other features, that are being created as we speak…
Data feed via bluetooth or wifi has to be on point, in order to maintain a good ‘communication link’ between the UAV and the BASE (Where the pilot stands)

According to the same review, Flirty and Domino’s partnered in 2016 for the first pizza delivery by a commercial drone in New Zealand.
Even junkfood champion, McDonalds and Uber Elevate have teamed-up to achieve drone food deliveries by 2023.
It’s not just within the food and drinks industry that drones are being deployed.

SOME TERMINOLOGY :
RWANDA as you can read here, from the New York Times, famously deployed drones to deliver medecines accross its complex landscape and probably was one of the pioneering nation in the field.
We will conclude this post with some glossary, in order to better understand the complex universe of #Dronetech :
UAV – Basically, a UAV is an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. They are able to fly remotely (such as with a controller or tablet) or even autonomously, via programming (RPA, see below).
UAS – A UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) includes not only the UAV (or drone), but also the pilot on the ground, or BASE, who might be controlling the flight or some collateral aspect (Like avoiding obstacles, minding the wind power which can disrupt the flight!! Basically, the UAV is a component of the UAS, since it refers to only the vehicle/aircraft itself.
RPA – Many pilots prefer the term “Remotely Piloted Aircraft.” —> You basically can program the flight like you would in ROBOTIC PROCESS AUTOMATION, or RPA in computer science.
Flying some UAVs could also require a certain amount of skills and several years of training
